Eugene
Grey was born in
Right after leaving High School Eugene became the lead guitarist with the great band from Savanna-La-Mar, “The Mighty Quinns”, led by Bryon “Bones” Atkinson. After the dissolution of the Quinns, Eugene went to the Yellow Bird Club to join Tony Hammond and The Sultans, in 1971. While in his band Eugene started to perfect his skills as a composer and arranger. His first two compositions were featured on a Jazz festival held at the Holiday Inn. Eugene has formed many bands through the years starting with The Soul Hermits, The Pot Hot Construction and he has played with many more, from the Bigzby Brothers and Stama Haughton. Then he joined the Fabulous Five, moving to Kingston where he worked on the first album for Fab Five, contributing one song “Vagabond” to the repertoire. He toured Canada, USA and the Caribbean with Fab Five. From Fab Five Eugene joined the Caribs at the Sheraton Kingston Hotel where sometimes he would fill in for Ernie Ranglin, at the top of the Sheraton. At the Sheraton Eugene formed his band “Jamaica Subway International”, after which in 1976 he migrated to the United States in search of more challenges and great learning experience.
In
the U.S. Eugene attained a B.S. Degree in Music Composition from the City
University of New York. He continued to develop as a multitalented
composer, arranger and accomplished guitarist. His virtuosity in Jazz,
Reggae and Classical music led him to compose, arrange and produce for many
different artists. He has performed as a member of the orchestra in
Off-Broadway plays such as “In A Pigs Valise”, “Pecong” and the Classical musical “Sally and Tom”. He
has also been the musical director for “Rasta”. Eugene has toured
worldwide with such artists as Mango Records’ Toots and The Maytals,
Cherry Lane Music’s Irving Burgie, Shanachie Records Ras Tesfa and Culture and Warner Brothers’ Kid Creole and The
Coconuts.
While with Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Eugene Grey has toured Europe, Africa and Japan, performing at the Monterey Jazz Festival and JVC Jazz Festival. They also performed in the movie “Lambada: The Forbidden Dance” as well as on television’s “The Tonight Show”, “Good Morning America”, New York at Night”, and “The Miss Teen USA Pageant”
Other artists Eugene has performed with include Big Youth, The Harlem Renaissance Orchestra, Steve DePass, West Africa’s Abdou M’boup and Vieux Diop, Tony Cafés and His Latin Orchestra, The Skatalites, Charlie Palmieri, Arthur Blythe and Gregory Isaacs with his Power Reggae Group in Switzerland.
Eugene
was the lead guitarist with Jamaica’s renowned Burning Spear Band. He also
performed with the Wailers Band. More recently he has been performing
with on eof South Florida’s popular Jazz groups, John
Davis & Company along with Jazz Saxophonist Joe ShaShaty.
”Timeless” is Eugene Grey’s third solo album and was recorded at Tropic Isle
Recording Studio in South Florida. The first two are Jazz/Reggae albums
“Power Reggae” and “Break the Chains”. Eugene is known in the industry as
the consummate musician who can perform and compose for every genre of
music. On Timeless he interprets popular R&B and Reggae hits with a
soulful and Jazz like flavor. A real treat for
lovers of music, with texture and rhythmic groove. So if you find the
time to listen and groove, your enjoyment will be Timeless.
